Underpinning in Coorparoo
In Coorparoo, Queensland's geological survey maps rock at four of our five sample points, the Neranleigh-Fernvale beds of mudstone, shale, chert and lava, with flood-plain alluvium at the fifth. QBCC says rocky terrain is usually not prone to the swelling and shrinking of clay.

Underpinning around Coorparoo
The Neranleigh-Fernvale beds are Devonian to Carboniferous in age and are described in the survey as mudstone, shale, arenite, chert, jasper, basic metavolcanics, pillow lava and conglomerate. The remaining point, on the western side, is Quaternary flood-plain alluvium of clay, silt, sand and gravel.
QBCC says its inspectors, when a subsidence complaint comes in, check maintenance issues such as leaking taps, air conditioning lines discharging next to footings and blocked gutters and downpipes. Where the mapped ground is mostly rock, that is a list worth working through before anyone assumes the soil has moved. A geotechnical report, not the map, is where what your footing bears on gets established.
Permits and Brisbane City Council rules
Two flood mappings reach Coorparoo, the Brisbane River flood planning area and the creek and waterway flood planning area, each over a modest part of the suburb. Council says overlays can change how much filling or excavation is allowed without planning approval, and that digging directly related to underpinning counts as building work. A licensed building certifier is the person Council names for building approval.
